What is Drive Smart?

Drive Smart launches with the Motability Scheme
The Motability Scheme has launched a new initiative called Drive Smart, designed to encourage safer and more responsible driving among Scheme customers, particularly those with younger named drivers.
What is Drive Smart?
Drive Smart uses a small device fitted to the windscreen, which connects to a smartphone app. It monitors driving behaviour such as speed, smoothness, longer trips, and night-time driving.
The app gives feedback on how safely the vehicle is being driven and awards points for good driving. These points can be exchanged for vouchers worth up to £160 per year at popular retailers including Amazon and Marks & Spencer.
Why has the Motability Scheme introduced Drive Smart?
Drive Smart has been created to:
- Encourage safer driving and reduce accident risks
- Help keep insurance costs down
- Support more environmentally friendly driving through smoother habits
- Provide helpful feedback to improve driver awareness
When will Drive Smart be introduced?
The rollout began on 1 October for a pilot group of existing customers with under-30 drivers. More customers will be invited to join in the coming months.
Renewal letters sent since 17 August include information about Drive Smart, and from 1 December, all new applications that include a driver under 30 will automatically be enrolled once their vehicle is delivered.
How does it work?
Once enrolled, customers will receive:
- A welcome email
- The Drive Smart device by tracked post
- Instructions on how to install and activate the device within 10 days
- Reminders if the device or app isn’t activated in time
Customers must also download the app and register all named drivers.
Important information for customers
Drive Smart will be mandatory for vehicles that include a driver under 30 on the insurance. If the device or app isn’t activated, or driving data isn’t collected, those drivers may lose eligibility to drive the Scheme vehicle, and insurance cover could be affected. The insurance provider remains Direct Line Motability (DLM), and Drive Smart support will be handled by them. Drive Smart does not apply to Open Policy customers, such as those living in care homes or using Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles with multiple carers.
